Two CATP students win our first-ever Gold at
District Five ADDY® Competition
Two of our Communication Arts Technology students snagged yet another Gold ADDY® at the American Advertising Federation’s District Five ADDY® Competition last week in Lexington, KY.
Joe Laughrey and Duncan Salot won a Student Gold ADDY® in the Television: Student category with their Proof of Concept Texting PSA.
This is our first ever Gold ADDY at the District competition. We’ve won several Silver ADDY’s in the past but never a Gold. This also marks our third Gold ADDY® for our filmmaking track in the CAT program, all of them from this year.
Joe’s and Duncan’s entry now goes on to compete at the National ADDY Competition with the American Advertising Federation in Washington, D.C.
We’ve never had any of our student’s work compete at the national level before. Wish us luck.
The Fifth District of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) represents 11 professional advertising associations and 18 college chapters throughout Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. It is the regional voice of the advertising industry to the AAF. We promote creative excellence through the Fifth District ADDY® Competition and enhance advertising education through the Fifth District National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) and our Scholarship program.
Congratulations Joe and Duncan on a job well done. Let’s keep it going.
Woo hoo.

Historical night at the Louies. CATP Students walk away with top honors and new records.
Ten CATP students walked away with top honors at the annual Louie Award Competition at the Galt House on Friday night. Our students won 14 Louie Awards: 6 Gold and 8 Silver (Holy Moly, another new record) eclipsing last year's record of thirteen Louie's. Our students made history in the Louie competition by being the first students ever to win awards for video/filmmaking. And yet another record was captured with our first ever sweep of both of the top prizes in the Student Category; The Judges Choice Award and The Best of Show Student Work. Simply Fantastic!
Joe Laughrey and Duncan Salot hoisted two golds over their shoulders when the night was done; a Gold Winner for their Anti-Texting video in the Television Advertising category and the Best of Show in Student Work for the same video. Simply Awesome!
But that's not all. Oh no. Tara Tingle won three Gold Louie's; one for her packaging design, Hell's Holler Moonshine, a very authentic looking and professional display, one for her Hell's Holler Moonshine logo, and then to boot (pun intended and taken unabashedly from her own Boot Scootin' Blueberry flavor) Tara went and won the Judges' Choice Award for her Hell's Holler Packaging design. She could hardly walk. She had so much hardware that the weight of the gold was too much for her to bear alone. Simply Amazing!
Krasimir Tolev won yet another Gold Louie for his photography work in his Apple Poster and another Silver Louie for photography in his Pear Festival Poster. What is that Krasimir, like 20 Louie's now? Krasimir has to move out of his apartment now just to find a place big enough to hold all of his awards. Simply Great!
Alicia Ruplinger walked away with three Silver Louie's for her CATP Brochure Series, her In:Human, A Festival of the New American Undead Theater Poster, and her Personal Lettermark. Simply Outstanding!
Sieglinde Jones made it a cakewalk with her Silver Louie win in the Elements of Advertising: Logo category for her Babycakes logo. Tabatha Evans also won a Silver Louie in the same category for her Personal Lettermark. Gina Risch won her first Louie award by claiming a Silver for her beautiful Tanqueray photograph in the category of Elements of Advertising: Photography. And last but certainly not least, especially when this is part of our historical achievement in video/filmmaking, Matt Gaither, James Hodge, Joe Laughrey and Duncan Salot also came home with another Silver Louie in the Television: Single Commercial category for their production of the CATP TV Commercial done for the Practicum class last semester. Simply Superb!
No other college has ever swept the top awards. Nobody, not no how. Not even SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design, an internationally renowned college). Congratulations to our students. Simply winners!
Well, since I've just about run out of adjectives to describe the marvelous efforts of our students I will let you relax a bit from the reading. Come back soon and I'll have all kinds of good photo stuff for you to look at. And when ya'll see these folks in the halls or in your classes, congratulate them. They represented the program and the college extremely well.
All of you make me, and the rest of our faculty, very, very proud.

CAT student's work shines for all to see at World Trade Day
Alicia Ruplinger is shown here beside her work that marked major presentation areas at the World Trade Day Exhibit at the Marriott Hotel in Downtown Louisville today. Alicia is a Communication Arts student majoring in the Advertising Design option. She not only designed all the exhibition banners at the show but the World Trade Day program as well. World Trade Day is hosted annually by the World Trade Center Kentucky and attracted business leaders from all over the globe to the event. This is just one example of how students in the Communication Arts program are becoming involved in advertising on a global scale. CAT students have been involved with the World Trade Center Kentucky now for two years. In addtion to the World Trade Day materials designed by Alicia, other students from the CAT program have helped to redesign the WTC Kentucky logo and assisted in redesigning the WTC KY website.
Congratulations to Alicia on a job well done.

PHOTO CHALLENGE: FOLLOW THE RULE OF THIRDS
Have something to share?
Log in or sign up to contribute!
The rule of thirds applies to all visual art and is a concept that every photographer should know well. It states that when composing an image you should imagine there are lines dividing the image into nine equal parts (two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines) and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
For this photo challenge, put the rule of thirds into action and show us your best image that utilizes it!
This photo challenge will close on Thursday, March 24th.

WE'RE MOVING!
The Communication Arts Program will be moving all classes and offices to the third floor of the VTI Building beginning with the Fall Semester. The VTI Building is the same building where your classes are taught now. Our photography and video classes will continue being taught on the third floor, as they are now. For our students, this means that, if you're taking classes in Advertising Design I, II, III, IV; Digital Imaging I or II; Webpage Design; 2D Animation; Illustration for Advertising; Folio; Typography; or Practicum classes, the room numbers that are on your schedule for the fall semester will not actually be the rooms where your classes will be. When you come to the rooms on your schedule in the fall just look for a notice on the door. The notice will direct you to your new room numbers on the third floor, same building. Have a great summer and we'll see you in our new space in the fall.

ART & COPY, A Film by Doug Pray
ART & COPY reveals the stories behind and the personal odysseys of some of the most influential advertising visionaries of our time and their campaigns, including Lee Clow (Apple Computer 1984, and today’s iPod); Dan Wieden (“Just Do It”); Phyllis K. Robinson (who invented the “me generation” with Clairol); Hal Riney (who helped President Reagan get re-elected); and George Lois (who saved MTV and launched Tommy Hilfiger overnight).
Directed by Doug Pray, ART & COPY captures the creative energy and passion behind the iconic campaigns that have had a profound impact on American culture. Featuring rare interviews with the aforementioned industry legends, the film seeks to identify the elements that transform an slogan into a pop culture catch phrases.
ART & COPY provides a window into the creative process and the individuals who have changed our lives in ways we may not realize,” said Mary Warlick, CEO of The One Club. "The movie looks at advertising not as products flying off the shelf but as the work of a few American heroes who feel passionately about their craft, ideas, and the ability of ideas to change how people feel."
