Troop 40 Canoe Trip, Memorial Weekend 2002
This was a one of a kind trip. We started out at 7 o’clock from the scout house Saturday morning. We arrived at the Elkhorn River at around 12:00 that day. After traveling to the spot where you unload the canoes into the river, we hit the water. We paddled that whole day, every once in a while hitting a rapid or two that would send us in the right direction. We stopped and ate our lunch on the side of the river, on a nice little beach of shale. We paddled about 12 miles from the starting point until we started looking for a campsite. Luckily we found a nice couple who let us camp on their front lawn. We got a very nice campsite that night compared to what was all around us. All the other fields had glass and metal in them. We had a great game of ultimate that night in our field right next to the river. We ate are dehydrated food, (which was really good) and headed to bed early.
Sunday morning we headed down the river again, this time for a good 10 miles. We were not so lucky this night getting a campsite, but we ended up with a pretty nice site. It was an island in the middle of the river, which we spread out over and set up camp. At the time we didn’t like the site, but it really wasn’t that bad. That day we played around in the river, riding the canoes, swimming, and just relaxing around camp. We loaded about 9 guys on one canoe before it sank.
That night we ate and had campfires. The next morning we only had 2 miles to paddle, so we easily completed them and drove home in good time. This trip was a good trip, we had fun trying to find campsites, had a good game of ultimate, dropped a few water filters in the river, tied two canoes together and paddled, got shot at by a crazy farmer, had a few guys flip their canoe, (getting there gear we), camping on islands, and having a good time.
