Kata Tori Menuchi Ikkyo

Example 1, Kata Tori Menuchi Ikkyo Irimi

Movie of Example 1.
Fig. 1 Start of Ikkyo Fig. 2 1st Irimi Step Fig. 3 2nd Irimi step

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start. This exercise is being done dynamically, as all of them should be, to emphasize the importance of being in motion from the beginning.

  2. Fig. 2 shows the 1st Irimi step. Nage was stepping in and striking at Uke's face while Uke was grabbing Nage's shoulder. This is basic and the same as Yokomen Uchi Tenchinage. As Nage steps in to strike Uke, Uke's left hand protects Uke's face. Because Nage's and Uke's arms cross this can become the same as Shomen Uchi Irimi.

  3. Fig. 3 shows the 2nd Irimi step. From here this is just a basic Shomen Uchi Irimi. The case where Uke holds on is the same as the next example using Ikkyo Tenkan.

Example 2, Kata Tori Menuchi Ikkyo Tenkan Holding On

Movie of Example 2.

Fig. 4 Start Fig. 5 Kuta Entry Strike Fig. 6 1st Tenkan Step

  1. Fig. 4 shows a dynamic start. Uke steps in, grabs and strikes.

  2. In Fig. 5 Nage steps to the outside and strikes at Uke's face. Uke's strike intercepts Nage's strike so Nage's strike does not land.

  3. Fig. 6 shows Nage step in with the 1st Tenkan step. As Nage steps Nage's right hand goes above Uke's left elbow to control Uke's elbow.

Fig. 7 2nd Tenkan Step Fig. 8 Uke Holding Fig. 9 Step Back

  4. Fig. 7 shows the 2nd Tenkan step taking Uke to the ground. Notice that Uke has not let go. It is important to be able to do every technique if Uke holds on and if Uke lets go.

  5. Fig. 8 shows Uke holding on during the Tornado Twist. Nage flows with this and shifts the pin to the arm that is holding on.

  6. Fig. 9 shows Nage stepping back to apply an arm bar and turn Uke over.

Fig. 10 Gather Right Foot Fig. 11 Knee Drop Pin

  7. Fig. 10 shows Nage after Nage's right foot gathers in and Uke's belly is down.

  8. Fig. 11 shows the knee drop into the pin. Nage does not hit Uke with the knee. Practice is very gentle.

Example 3, Kata Tori Menuchi Ikkyo Tenkan

Movie of Example 3.

Fig. 12 Start Fig. 13 Kuta Entry Strike Fig. 14 1st Tenkan Step

  1. Fig. 12 shows the start position for dynamic practice. The spacing is such that Nage's and Uke's hands do not quite touch.

  2. In Fig. 13 Nage is stepping to the left side and entering for the Kuta Entry Strike. The strike does not land because Uke's arm is in the way. Nage's right hand is reaching just above Uke's elbow. Uke has grasped Nage's shoulder. This is practice for the worst case but normally Nage would not want to let that happen.

  3. Fig. 14 is the end of the 1st Tenkan step. Nage has stepped beside Uke, not in front of Uke. Nage is in a strong Tornado Twist here.

Fig. 15 2nd Tenkan Step Fig. 16 Tornado Twist

  4. Fig. 15 shows the 2nd Tenkan step. Nage is continuing to pull Uke into Nage's center.

  5. Fig. 16 shows the end of the Tornado Twist with Uke wrapped around Nage. From here Nage can finish Ikkyo or change to another technique.
