Movie of Kuta Side Step

Fig. 1 Start of Movement Fig. 2 Kuta Punch Fig. 3 Pendulum Step

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start of the movement from a casual stance.

  2. Fig. 2 shows the Kuta punch touching the bag.

  3. Fig. 3 shows the Pendulum step with both feet off of the ground. This step would not usually be there throwing a person. The dynamics of throwing the bag is different from throwing a person. The exercise is still valuable because it is good conditioning and the feeling to Nage is the same.

Fig. 4 Position Step Fig. 5 Step Back Fig. 6 Tornado Twist

  4. Fig. 7 shows a step to get into position. With a person this would usually not be necessary because the foot would be in position at the end of the Kuta punch.

  5. Fig. 8 is the end of the step back at ninety degrees. This with a person is to take Uke to the Off Balance point. The bag has no Off Balance point so it is much harder to throw than a person and the body has to be positioned differently. This exercise still teaches Nage how to coordinate the strike with the throw and how Nage's body weight must be used to execute the throw.

  6. Fig. 9 shows the Spin and Pin but the bag is held up rather than damaging it and also having to pick it up again.
