Kote Gaeshi

Movie of Kote Gaeshi.

Fig. 1 Start of Kote Gaeshi Fig. 2 1st Step Fig. 3 2nd Step

  1. Normally Kote Gaeshi is executed after Uke's balance has been taken with Waki Gatame as shown in Fig. 1.

  2. In Fig. 2 Nage steps out and shifts to the Kote Gaeshi Grip shown in Fig. 9.

  3. In Fig. 3 Nage continues spinning and takes the second step. This step is the same as a Tenshim. This realization makes the step more powerful and allows one to realize that Tenshim moves can be used from Kote Gaeshi.

Fig. 4 Tornado Twist Fig. 5 Turn Back Fig. 6 Standing Pin

  4. Fig. 4 shows the end of the Tornado Twist. A common mistake here is to stop facing Uke. Stopping facing Uke will leave Uke on Uke's back enabling Uke to successfully attack Nage. Nage's continuing to twist Nage's body and Nage's hands causes Uke to turn onto Uke's side or stomach making an attack by Uke very difficult. Never stop and admire your work!

  5. In Fig. 5 Nage turns back in preparation for the standing pin.

  6. Fig. 6 shows the standing pin. Nage's left foot is at Uke's arm pit and Nage's right foot is back nearly 30 to 45 degrees from Uke's side.

Fig. 7 1st Knee Down Fig. 8 Formal Pin Fig. 9 Hand Detail

  7. In Fig. 7 Nage's right knee has dropped next to Uke's head for the formal seated pin.

  8. Fig. 8 shows the formal pin. A common mistake here is to move Uke's elbow towards Uke's head. Both of Uke's shoulders and Uke's hips must be pinned. To do this Uke's hand must be pressed down and towards Uke's left shoulder and Uke's elbow must be pressed towards Uke's hips.

  9. Fig. 9 shows the detail of the hand grip. Uke's hand must bend acutely at the wrist. Nage's little finger is relaxed so that it does not prevent this. It is very important to control Uke's 1st finger. Nage can open a closed fist by pressing down Uke's 1st finger.
