Lapel Grab Waki Gatame

Reference: Waki Gatame

Example 1, Kata Tori Waki Gatame Irimi

Movie of Example 1.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Kuta Entry Strike Fig. 3 2nd Step

  1. Fig. 1 shows the initial grab. The assumption is that Nage cannot get Uke to let go and Nage cannot push into Uke. Nage can only move Uke's balance point.

  2. In Fig. 2 Nage's left shoulder is held immobile by Uke's hand so Nage rotates around Uke's hand to strike Uke with the Kuta Entry Strike. This is the 1st Irimi step. As Nage strikes, Nage's left hand comes to Uke's chest and Nage's palm grasps the outside of Uke's wrist with Nage's thumb down. Detail of the hand grip is shown in Figs. 12 and 13.

  3. In Fig. 3 Nage has taken the 2nd Irimi step and Nage's arm has come over Uke's arm for Waki Gatame. Detail of the arm coming over is shown in Fig. 14.

Fig. 4 Off Balance Position Fig. 5 Pin

  4. Fig. 4 shows Waki Gatame transition position after the Tornado Twist. At this point Nage can do most techniques.

  5. Fig. 5 shows the Waki Gatame pin.

Example 2, Kata Tori Waki Gatame Tenkan

Movie of Example 2.

Fig. 6 Start Fig. 7 Grab Wrist Fig. 8 1st Tenkan Step

  1. Fig. 6 shows the start with Uke holding Nage's lapel. Two assumptions are made here. The first is that Uke's grip is so strong that you cannot get Uke to let go. The second assumption is that Uke is so strong that Nage cannot push Uke's hand to Uke. For this reason Nage spins around the hand or in some cases extends Uke's arm out, Up or Down.

  2. In Fig. 7 Nage's palm reaches up and rests on the side of Uke's wrist with the thumb down. In this case there is not a Kuta Entry strike because Uke's arms a straight enough and long enough that Nage cannot reach Uke's head. Detail of Nage's hand position is shown in Figures 12 and 13.

  3. In Fig. 8 Nage takes the 1st Tenkan step forward without pushing on Uke's hand and Nage's arm goes over Uke's arm. Detail of the arm position is shown in Fig. 14.

Fig. 9 2nd Tenkan Step Fig. 10 Tornado Twist Fig. 11 Pin

  4. Fig. 9 Nage takes the 2nd Tenkan step and rotates Uke around Uke's center of balance.

  5. Fig. 10 shows Uke down after the Tornado Twist. From this point Nage can do most techniques.

  6. Fig. 11 shows the Waki Gatame pin.

Fig. 12 Hand From Outside Fig. 13 Hand Detail From Inside Fig. 14 Detail of Arm Position

  7. Fig. 12 shows the detail of the hand from the outside. Gripping this way allows Nage to get Waki Gatame and change to many different techniques. Nage's arm can just drape over Uke's arm but that gives Nage many fewer options.

  8. Fig. 13 shows the detail of the hand from the inside. It is not necessary to grip Uke's wrist. Just having the hand in place puts Nage in the proper position to do many techniques.

  9. Fig. 14 shows the detail of Nage's arm position in Fig. 3 and Fig. 8. Nage's arm will continue to circle Uke's arm as the technique continues.
