Lapel Grab Ikkyo

Reference: Ikkyo

Example 1, Kata Tori Ikkyo Irimi

Movie of Example 1.

Fig. 1 Start Fig. 2 Kuta Entry Strike Fig. 3 Arm Coming Over

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start with Uke holding Nage's lapel.

  2. In Fig. 2 Nage takes the 1st Irimi step and delivers the Kuta Entry Strike. At the same time Nage's left hand comes up by Nage's chest and touches just above Uke's elbow with Nage's thumb on the inside in typical Ikkyo fashion.

  3. Fig. 3 shows how Uke's arm comes over as Nage's hips twist. Nage cannot initially lift Uke's elbow. Nage drops down while stepping into Uke. Uke's hand is holding Nage so Uke's hand drops below Uke's elbow. Now when Nage's hips do the Tornado Twist Uke's elbow tends to go up. This is facilitated by the Kuta strike that forces Uke to move back and up.

    Fig. 4 Uke On Floor

  4. Fig. 4 shows Uke on the floor at the end of the 2nd Irimi step and the Tornado Twist.

Example 2, Kata Tori Ikkyo Tenkan

Movie of Example 2.

Fig. 5 Start Fig. 6 1st Tenkan Step Fig. 7 Elbow Up

  1. Fig. 5 shows the start with Uke holding Nage's lapel. Nage should try to keep this from happening.

  2. Fig. 6 shows the end of the 1st Tenkan step. Nage's left hand is just above Uke's elbow with the thumb on the inside. Nage's right hand is striking towards Uke's face. Nage cannot usually reach Uke's face but the strike deters Uke from turning into Nage. Notice that when Nage's body dropped with the 1st Tenkan step it took Uke's hand down below Uke's elbow.

  3. Fig. 7 shows that because Nage's body and Uke's hand are below Uke's elbow as Nage continues to move forward with the Tornado Twist Uke's elbow tends to be pushed up.

Fig. 8 2nd Tenkan Step Fig. 9 Pin

  4. Fig. 8 shows the end of the 2nd Tenkan step. At this point Nage can change to other techniques.

  5. Fig. 9 shows Uke on the floor and pinned.
