Ushiro Ryokatatori

Movie of Ushiro Ryokatatori

Fig. 1 Start of Ushiro Attack Fig. 2 Entry Kuta Strike Fig. 3 1st Tenkan Step

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start of the Ushiro attack. In this case Uke will strike at Nage with a direct strike to the head. As usual distance is such that the weapons will not touch.

  2. Fig. 2 shows Nage's Entry Strike. Nage is doing a very deep Tenkan movement so Nage's right foot takes a large step forward to cover the distance. As always Nage's first strike is with the lead hand.

  3. In Fig. 3 the first step of the Tenkan is behind Uke's rear foot rather than Uke's front foot. At this point Nage's hands catch Uke's collar with Nage's fingers inside the collar and Nage's thumbs pointed towards each other.

Fig. 4 2nd Tenkan Step Fig. 5 Spin Fig. 6 Hand Detail

  4. In Fig. 4 Nage has taken the second Tenkan step. Notice that Nage's hands are still in front of Nage's shoulders with Nage's arms bent. Nage is in a strong Tornado twist taking Uke down with body movement and not Nage's hands jerking Uke down as frequently seen. Using the body and not the arms to do the throw makes the throw easier for Nage and gives Nage great control. Because of the control Nage can protect Uke and prevent the very hard fall that this throw normally produces.

  5. Fig. 5 shows the usual Tornado Spin to finish the technique.

  6. Fig. 6 shows the detail of the grip on the collar.

  7. All of the Ushiro attacks have this basic foot work. The hands grab in different ways and depending on Uke's response the technique might end in different ways.
