Kata Tori Menuchi

Kata Tori Menuchi, as the name implies, is basically a shoulder grab with a strike to the face. The crucial factor here is the way the shoulder is grabbed. With the Lapel Grab, Uke's arm is on the inside of Nage's arm. With the shoulder grab, Uke's arm is on the outside of Nage's arm. This difference makes a difference in the types of movement Nage can do.

  1. Fig. 1 shows the basic hand positions for Kata Tori Menuchi. Uke and Nage should be in Gyaku Hammi so that their groins are not as exposed. This will be the case for the static version of any variation of the attack.

  2. Fig. 2 shows a shoulder grab without a strike. This could also be both shoulders grabbed. Again both partners are in Gyaku Hammi.
