Kuta Techniques

Kuta Tenkan

Movie of Kuta Tenkan

This technique shows one of the ways of combining Kuta and Aiki.

Fig. 1 Start of Kuta Strike Fig. 2 Kuta Punch Fig. 3 Pendulum Step

  1. Fig. 1 shows the start of the movement from a casual stance

  2. Fig. 2 is the Kuta Punch..

  3. Fig. 3 shows the Pendulum step. The hands are just grabbing the bag. For a real technique the back (right) inside forearm might strike but frequently neither hand strikes after the Kuta punch. Nage's body is rotating counterclockwise making a strike with the Nage's left hand difficult.

Fig. 4 1st Tenkan Step Fig. 5 2nd Tenkan Step

  4. Fig. 4 shows the first Tenkan Step. The foot work will vary depending on the technique and the dynamics of the situation. The bag is much harder to throw than a person because it does not have an off balance line and it is heavy with a low center of gravity.

  5. Fig. 5 shows the end of the 2nd tenkan step. The bag was not dropped on the floor to prevent damaging the bag.
