2010 Grant/Award Guidelines

Districts Eligible:  Bullitt, Hardin, Jefferson, Larue, Logan, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer

The Kentucky Council on Economic Education (KCEE) is pleased to announce the 2010 Excellence in Teaching Economics, Entrepreneurship and/or Personal Finance Education Grant/Award Program sponsored by Citizens Union Bank (CUB).  This program will recognize teachers who excel in innovative, unique, and engaging strategies to teach economics, entrepreneurship and/or personal finance education.

Teacher/School Eligibility:

The grant/award program is open to all K-12 public or private teachers that are in the following Kentucky school districts served by Citizens Union Bank:  Bullitt, Hardin, Jefferson, Larue, Logan, Oldham, Shelby, and Spencer.  The term “teacher” includes certified staff that is currently scheduled with student classes.  Excluded are administrators, supervisors, counselors, librarians, school psychologists, or instructional coordinators.  Only programs carried out between January, 2010 and April 15, 2010 are eligible for judging.

Grant/Award and Recognition: 

·         Phase I/Reading/Critique Phase - Ten (10) Citizens Union Bank Excellence in Teaching Economics, Personal Finance and/or Entrepreneurship grants will be awarded from the applications received.  Each of the ten (10) recipients will receive up to $200 (including shipping and handling) of curricula from the Kentucky Council on Economic Education catalog.  The online catalog can be accessed at www.kcee.org/catalog .

·         Phase II/Observation Phase – Each of the ten (10) finalist candidates who complete Phase II (Observation) will receive a $100 stipend.

·         Teacher of the Year Selection – One of the finalist candidates who complete both Phase l and Phase ll will be selected to receive the 2010 Citizens Union Bank Teacher of the Year for Excellence in Teaching Economics, Entrepreneurship and/or Personal Finance Education. The winner will receive a $500 cash award, a certificate and a press release for their local media.  The award will be presented in June at KCEE’s 2010 LifeFundamental$ Summit in Louisville, KY.

Deadline for Application:    NOVEMBER 18, 2009 

Judging Criteria: 

Successful applications will demonstrate the teacher’s ability to:

·         Clearly describe the project/unit including goals and objectives for a minimum of four (4) lessons with activities that teach basic principles and concepts of economics, entrepreneurship and/or personal finance education.

·         Create classroom experiences that are innovative, unique, and engaging for students.

·         Provide a clear and concise description of how the objectives of the project/unit will be measured.

  • Provide a clear explanation of why teaching economics, entrepreneurship and/or personal finance education is important.
  • Submit publicity for project/unit to local newspaper (i.e. press release, photographs)

              (This criterion will be used as one of the determinants for selecting the overall winner.)
